And the locals like nothing better than a good gossip. Another similarity is that the population of Nantucket out of season is tiny and everyone knows everyone else. This island is a popular holiday resort, very much like Åland, the Nordic island that I write about between Finland and Sweden. Like many of Elin Hilderbrand’s books, this one is set in Nantucket, an island off the East Coast. I soon found out why! Luckily, I had a transatlantic flight coming up where I could read uninterruptedly because I just couldn’t put this book down. She is obviously very popular in the US, so I picked up The Rumor. Then, recently, when in Arizona and browsing in a Barnes & Noble in Phoenix, I saw Elin Hilderbrand’s books everywhere. I found this author quite recently because I noticed she was one of the writers that people who buy my books also read. Dubbed ‘The Queen of the Beach Read’, this author is hugely prolific, something I adore because it means I can binge read to my heart’s content. This month’s best read is The Rumor by Elin Hilderbrand.

Every payday brings Troy Maxson closer to his wrestling partner. Life is a series of routines culminating in death. As the evening progresses, Troy is sometimes joined by his eldest son, Lyons ( Russell Hornsby), who borrows money, or his disabled war veteran brother, Gabe ( Mykelti Williamson), who has just moved from Troy’s home in a defiant display of his independence. Troy cuddles with her, tossing the raunchiest dialogue he has to offer in her direction. Every payday, garbage collector Troy Maxson ( Denzel Washington) holds court in the backyard of the Pittsburgh home he shares with his wife, Rose ( Viola Davis) and their son, Cory ( Jovan Adepo). It was virtually inevitable that there would be a price to pay for her dangerous lifestyle, resulting in a friend with life changing injuries and another falling to his death. This bone deep love of climbing led to her inability to live without the ever growing risks that she embraces with a passion, its the risks that made her feel so vitally alive. Jenifry 'Jen' Shaw is a woman who has lived and breathed free climbing since her early childhood spent running wild with her brother, Kit, at their hippy mother's ancestral home of Tregonna, in the village of Craighston, purchased by their father, a renowned mountaineer and adventurer. This is Jane Jesmond's debut, an exciting and thrilling piece of crime fiction set in the dramatic landscape of Cornwall with its abandoned mines and history of smuggling, and recent evidence of the drugs trade and arrival of desperate refugees. It does that okay, but ultimately it’s a couple hundred pages of fluff that you could easily catch up on anything consequential to the story with a one-paragraph summary. The purpose of this book seems to be to reset the stakes after book 3 so that we can go into book 5 with a fresh sense of drama. Warrick has a gift for constructing narratives with a novelistic energy and detail, and in this volume, he creates the most revealing portrait yet laid out in a book of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, the founding father of the organization that would become the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL)." He added, "for readers interested in the roots of the Islamic State and the evil genius of its godfather there is no better book to begin with than Black Flags." Bob Drogin of the Los Angeles Times similarly described it as "invaluable for anyone struggling to understand the gruesome excesses and inexplicable appeal of ISIS," despite noting that it works better as a biography of al-Zarqawi than "explaining the subsequent 'rise of ISIS,' as the title promises." It took me a week and a half to get through a 12-hour audiobook because I kept preferring silence to actually listening to it. The story has all the ingredients I usually like so I’m struggling to put my finger on exactly what caused me to be so bored by it. But I think, in hindsight, I’d have been better off with the ebook. Given there is an overarching story to the series, that was probably a good decision. Hard As It Gets is the first even though I came out in 2013, I like to start at the beginning. My TBL is shorter than my TBR so I thought there was a better chance of finally making a start if I tried the audio version. In fact, I think I own most of the ebooks in the series already – I just haven’t got to them yet. I’ve been meaning to try the Hard Ink series by Laura Kaye for ages now.
